Serendipity in the Use of Satellite Scatterometer, SAR, and Other Sensor Data

چکیده
hen marine geophysical measurements reach resolutions of ten to hundreds of meters over 1000-km regions, a new realm of analysis is opened. Such data did not exist prior to Seasat in 1978. However, the value of these data has been neglected for almost two decades. The reasons are many: Star Wars, modeler indifference, fear of a new form of data where empiricism reigns, and numerical model mysticism. Now the Seasat microwave sensors, finally including synthetic aperture radar (SAR), are coming of age. Organized large eddies (OLEs) that are endemic to the geophysical planetary boundarylayer (PBL) solution exemplify the new phenomena that are revealed in SAR data. Theory for OLEs has existed for 30 years. If they are truly as common as SAR data suggest, then Geophysical Climate Model PBLs must be improved, buoy data corrected, and climatology revised. (

An assessment of Sea Ice Extent Retrieval Based on HY-2A Scatterometer Data Using Other Satellite Products
A sea ice extent retrieval algorithm over the polar area based on scatterometer data of HY-2A satellite has been established. Four parameters are used for distinguishing between sea ice and ocean with Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis method. The method is used to generate polar sea ice extent maps of the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the full 2013-2014 from the scatterometer aboard HY-2A...
متن کاملSea Ice Monitoring in the European Arctic Seas Using a Multi-Sensor Approach
Advances in satellite remote sensing of sea ice and icebergs in Arctic regions are described in case studies showing the benefits of using multi-sensor observations. It is demonstrated how Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) used in combination with optical images can improve discrimination of open water, nilas, young ice and three gradations of deformed first-year ice. The classification method is ...
متن کاملPolar Sea Ice Monitoring Using HY-2A Scatterometer Measurements
A sea ice detection algorithm based on Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis is developed to segment sea ice and open water for the Ku-band scatterometer onboard the China’s Hai Yang 2A Satellite (HY-2A/SCAT). Residual classification errors are reduced through image erosion/dilation techniques and sea ice growth/retreat constraint methods. The arctic sea-ice-type classification is estimated via...
متن کاملAnalysis of temporal and spatial correlation between precipitable water vapor retrievals from AIRS satellite sensor and 29 synoptic station measurements in Iran
Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is one of the most important quantities in meteorology and climate studies. PWV in Earth's atmosphere can be measured by Sun-photometer, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and radiosonde from surface, atmosphere and space-based systems, respectively. In this paper, we use PWV measured by Sun-photometer located in Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Scien...
متن کاملMapping of Mesoscale and Submesoscale Wind Fields Using Synthetic Aperture Radar
The long-term goal of the research effort to be described in this paper is to investigate the possibility of obtaining quantitative information about the near-surface wind field and perhaps other parameters that characterize the Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layer (MABL) from an analysis of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Because of its potential for obtaining such information, this appli...
